Kevina-Jo’s Dance of the Peacock Spider
20 Feb 2017

Kevina-Jo’s Dance of the Peacock Spider

Blue Mountains-based artist Kevina-Jo Smith has spent the past few months laboriously sorting through thousands of metres of recycled string, electrical conduit and steel strapping to create her latest work for Sculpture at Scenic World 2017.

One of 13 local artists exhibiting in this year’s show, Kevina’s work, Dance of the Peacock Spider, will eventually become a giant 17 metre wide psychedelic spider’s web suspended high above the ancient rainforest of the Jamison Valley.

Acid Spider is one of 35 sculptures in this year’s show and is a response to the environmental challenges that we currently face. “Each piece of this sculpture is intricate, delicate and time consuming to create”, says Kevina.

“It is an act of endurance … this process serves as a tribute to the natural world and as a ritual protecting against its destruction.”
